Last Friday there was a very odd group of cars and people passing through Yass – for a very good cause.

The Beyond Blue fundraising rally “Beyond the Bitumen” team made Yass the first stop on their four-day rally travelling through the Southern Highlands, Tablelands and the South Coast – Bowral to Nowra via Bega!

Some 85 cars and 225 entrants arrived in Yass around 12md on Friday to be served lunch by Yass Rotarians before heading off through the outskirts of Canberra and on to Cooma for an overnight stay.

The rally is one of several organised by Peter and Trish Fehon to raise both money and awareness of the impact of mental health and depression across the population.  Peter and Trish lost a daughter to suicide some years ago and they are passionate in their efforts to save others from a similar tragedy in their lives.

During a break from Lunch on Friday, local well known rally fan, Peter Beaton presented Trish and Peter with a cheque for $2,000 that had been raised in the Yass Community over the last year or so.  Pete’s father, John Beaton or JB as he was well known, was a regular participant in these rallies in the big, black, Bat Mobile.

This year’s rally saw a great diversity of vehicles, including the Blues Brothers, a 1964 Ford Mustang, a variety of modern four wheel drives and one with a crew dressed magnificently as circus clowns.

Trish and Peter Fehon said that Rotary is a great supporter of their program catering for large groups in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and they look forward to using Yass as a way point in future rallies.
